Grammar Guides

Spelling, punctuation, and grammar is often referred to as SPaG in schools. It is essential that children understand and use all the grammar and punctuation set out in the National Curriculum, as they are the building blocks for children learning to speak, write, and listen. Having a good knowledge of grammar allows your child to communicate their ideas and feelings, and helps them choose the right language for any situation. Your child will be informally tested on spelling, grammar, and punctuation by their teacher throughout their time at St Dunstan's Catholic School and in Year 2 and 6, children will take part in national tests, which are a summative assessment of the end of each key stage.

Some grammar words, like fronted adverbial and subordinating conjunctions, can seem a bit daunting, but children will learn to use these types of words automatically from their reading and speaking – the difficult part is being able to recognise them.

Below, we provide some guides for parents to demystify some of the SPaG terminology to make supporting your child at home as easy possible.

A useful glossary for parents and pupils of the grammar and punctuation terms that children will encounter in both KS1 and KS2. There is a pack for each year group, that includes what will have been taught in previous year groups.
