In 'author' news...

"What really knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it."
J.D. Salinger

Tony Bradman

Tony Bradman
Tony Bradman was born in 1954 in London, where he still lives.
He is an English writer of children's books and short speculative fiction best known for the Dilly the Dinosaur book series. Bradman is the author of more than 50 books for young people.

"I discovered books and stories when I was at primary school, and soon became the kind of person who reads all the time!"

Y4 have been reading 'Anglo-Saxon Boy' and have been getting creative, writing some fantastic imaginative stories. Tony Bradman was really pleased to see how inspired they were after reading his book. Brilliant job Y4!

"I'm very impressed! Glad to hear that they've been inspired by Anglo-Saxon Boy... you'll have to let me know if they've got any questions!" - Tony Bradman

Joshua Seigal

Joshua Seigal wrote a blog and featured the work of some year 6 pupils, after they got in touch with him to share their work with him. You can read the blog here.

After contacting Joshua Seigal, following some powerful poetry writing in Y6, Joshua Seigal said this...
"Thank you so much for your message. I can't tell you how meaningful it is to receive messages like this - it really makes my job worthwhile and brings some joy in these very strange times! "I was delighted when Mrs. Baker, the Year 6 teacher at St Dunstan's Primary School in Birmingham, got in touch with me recently to share some poems that her year 6 class had written. The poems were based on my piece 'Just A Book?' which is published in I Don't Like Poetry (Bloomsbury) and which can be viewed online here. One thing that really impressed me about the poems was the rhyming. A tight, coherent rhyme scheme can be difficult to achieve, so I can tell that Mrs. Baker's class worked hard on their poems. Here, then, is a selection of fantastic poem from year 6." - Joshua Siegal

Struan Murray

Picture
Struan Murray is Scottish and grew up in Edinburgh, the youngest of a large, rowdy family of redheads. He has a PhD in genetics and is now a lecturer in biochemistry at the University of Oxford.
Orphans of the Tide is his first novel, published by Puffin February 20th 2020.

Year 6 contacted Struan Murray, author of the exciting 'Orphans of the Tide,' after they started reading it, because they were so in love with his writing. They wanted to share their versions of the opening to the book (which, if you read it, will have you hooked). He was so blown away with their work, he even suggested that he might magpie some of their work and quote it in his sequel. Amazing job Year 6!

"Hi Mrs B! I'm so delighted to hear you're all enjoying Orphans and even more delighted that it's inspired some new writing!...Incredible stuff! 'Grim with the menace of rain' and 'made it feel as if it had been kicked into existence' - so brilliant. I'm probably going to have to steal these for the sequel..." - Struan Murray

Sophie Anderson

Picture
Sophie Anderson grew up in Swansea, studied at Liverpool University, and has worked as a geologist and science teacher. She wrote textbooks until characters from Slavic folklore began appearing in her work. Sophie has an international family and loves to write stories inspired by different folklores and cultures. Miss Forde was very impressed with the reading that our home learners were enjoying and reached out to Sophie Anderson saying, 'Thank you Sophie Anderson for keeping Y5 going in lockdown!!"

Sophie Anderson replied, "This is wonderful! Hello. Y5!!!"

Emer Stamp

On Wednesday 3rd March, during Reading Week, our pupils had the opportunity to interview an author: not just any author, but bestselling author and author of the Diary of a Pig series, Emer Stamp!

They absolutely loved it. What an exciting opportunity for them all!
"Thank you so much @EmerStamp for answering all of our questions, we can't wait to read Pest!"
